Features: fruits separating into mericarps; ovate or orbicular or elliptic; with carpophore bifid to the base; beak absent; mericarps homomorphic or mericarps heteromorphic; scabrous or sparsely pubescent all over or densely hairy or tuberculate or covered with capitate hairs; 3.0-14.0 mm long; 2.5-12.0 mm broad; strongly compressed dorsally; with primary ribs; dorsal ribs filiform; marginal ribs narrow-winged or marginal ribs thickened; mericarp ribs straight; with entire margin; calyx teeth prominent or calyx teeth obsolete; short; linear or linear-lanceolate or triangular; stylopodia conical; styles short or styles medium or styles long; recurved; cell borders distinct; cells isodiametric; anticlinal walls convex; outer cell walls flat; cuticle smooth or cuticle striate with straight striae or cuticle rugulate or cuticle striato-knotted; cuticle on hairs rugulate or cuticle on hairs tuberculate; exocarp cells small; commissure broad, exocarp interrupted near edges of marginal ribs; inner fibrous mesocarp present, continous; mesocarp parenchyma partly composed of cells with lignified pitted walls; vascular bundles compact; situated medially in primary ribs; vittae vallecular and commissural; solitary in furrows or 2–5 in each furrow; two on commissural side or 4–10 on commissural side; rib sectetory ducts small, present in some ribs only; endocarp not lignified; crystals obsolete; endosperm flat, slightly convex or slightly concave on commissural side; embryo with two cotyledons.

Note: if mericarps heteromorphic, there are fruits of two types. The first is usual, with two similar fertile mericarps, being strongly compressed dorsally; the second consisting of one developed mericarp only, being globose and with deep cavity on commissural side. The following description is related to "normal" mericarp only. Calyx teeth often unequal. Lignified parenchyma is situated in marginal ribs only.
